Ouch! You're haaaarsh.

Give the poor girl a break - we've all gotta get through our "coming out" ethnic family saga piece before we move on to more interesting things. If this were her 5th book, it would deserve every skewer you could impale it with. But as her first.....think of your earliest writings - the ones that make you cringe and writhe to re-read. But they got you here, didn't they?

sweetie, i have the greatest affection for the crap that got me here --- but i'm not stinkin' up the place with it. i leave it in the drawer---mostly---where it belongs.

of course, i haven't read it, so there's a possibility that she did an ishmael reed on the language (somehow i doubt that). but the thing is: this is fiction. so she had a lot of freedom to do something different. and the story structure sounds like five thousand other books she's read or read about.

it's not the identity search i have a problem with. it's the particular story that she's forced her identity search into, all triumphal and eastmeetswest like that. gag. nobody should be allowed to get away with that anymore.

i'm i'm not just taking her to task for it, i'm also calling out her publisher for its horrible taste and frank racism in needing ethnic stories to be so regimented.

I just saw namesake and thought it was a great movie though. Just sayin'
